Dental Sedation

DENTAL SEDATION

Some people are so frightened of attending a dental practice they allow their dental health and well-being to become an issue before seeking help.

For patients who do find the experience upsetting or very worrying we are able to offer Dental Sedation otherwise known as Intravenous Sedation (IV sedation). It allows practically any patient to be comfortable, relaxed and to feel safe during their dental treatment. From our experience, patients are usually very surprised at how easy it is to cope with dental treatments after they have chosen dental sedation.

At Maven Dental Reynella, formerly Dental Partners Reynella, a specialist anaesthetist always gives our sedation. He or she remains with the patient throughout the procedure and continually monitors breathing, heart rate and blood pressure as well as comfort.

IV sedation is more difficult, If a patient suffers with some medical conditions, they must discuss them with the anaesthetist before the procedure so that the sedation can be tailored to the individual. .

The patient usually is completely awake 30 minutes after the procedure is completed. Very occasionally the effects may last a bit longer, so it is important that a responsible adult accompanies the patient for at least 6 hours afterwards, and preferably overnight..

Any patient having IV sedation needs to have nothing to eat before the procedure starts. This is to ensure that the stomach is empty. You will NOT be able to drink alcohol, drive or work machinery for the rest of the day.
